With Halloween officially looming on the horizon, we advise our patients in Baxter, Minnesota, to not sacrifice your healthy smile to the spoils of sugary treats! At Baxter Dental, Dr. Scott Timmons and Dr. Justin Gangestad encourage you and your loved ones to take good care of those hard-earned smiles by balancing holiday celebrations with extra care for teeth and gums. To help you navigate the holidays safely, here are some healthier smile options:

Healthy Halloween Treats

— Keep candy bowls filled to the brim with fresh fruit. Crisp fall apples in all of their variety, and clementines or tangerines are easy to grab and snack on.

— Treat your family to healthy, snack-sized bags of pretzels, popcorn, dried fruit, nuts, pumpkin seeds, and trail mix. These are also healthy choices whether you keep bowls of these in your home for your family or at your office for yourself.

— Kids love fun treats, you can decorate small oranges, tangerines or clementines like jack-o-lanterns with non-toxic ink to display in your bowls at home. These can also be handed out on Halloween instead of candy, and your neighbors (of all ages) will love you.

— Help your kids celebrate with non-sugary treats. Reward them throughout the month with festive treats such as pencils, erasers, stickers, temporary tattoos, glow sticks, play-doh, sticky spooky eyeballs and wiggly spider rings. Treats don’t have to be sweet!

As you can see, just making a few creative changes to your annual Halloween festivities will allow you to enjoy the fun and keep your healthy smile. We also recommend stepping up your daily oral hygiene routine and making sure to keep any scheduled end-of-year dental cleanings.
